The old concession stand will be rehabilitated to house an exciting new interactive Learning Center. Programs and materials are being developed and the hope is to begin fitting the building out in the winter of 2025. The FRSP volunteers will be there to help with the creation of the center and assist with future programs. These will include Ranger Story Time, Creature of the Week,Discovery Walks, hands-on exhibits and lots of great information and programs about the history of the park, Walter Reid and the Stone Schoolhouse.
On Thursday, August 21, the Friends of Reid State Park met with State Park officials to present a check in the amount of $11,214 to support the development of a Nature Center at Griffith's Head in the old concessions building. These funds were the result of generous donations from many Reid lovers and a $5,000 match from FRSP. Representatives of the state included: Amanda Beal, Commissioner of the Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry (DACF); Haylee Parsons, Park Manager; Andy Cutko, Director of the Bureau of Parks and Lands; Gary Best, Southern Regional Parks Manager, and Jim Britt, Director of Communications at DACF. Katie Langley of the Maine Trust for Local News/Times-Record covered the event.
